Aston Villa’s Champions League magical win run continued with a memorable night celebrating Unai Emery’s second anniversary as manager, as they took the top spot in the group phase.
Captain John McGinn, Villa’s longest-serving player, opened the scoring with a free-kick in the 55th minute that bypassed everyone, including Bologna’s goalkeeper, and found the back of the net. The goal left Bologna frustrated, believing they were denied a free-kick moments before.
Villa extended their lead nine minutes later when Jhon Duran, in his first start at Villa Park in 11 months, netted his seventh goal of the season from close range. However, it was his final contribution before being substituted by Ollie Watkins, a move that visibly upset the Colombian forward.
With earlier victories against Young Boys and Bayern Munich, Villa now sits comfortably with nine points from three games, making an impressive return to Europe’s elite competition under Emery’s leadership.
A Night to remember at Villa Park
Villa fans were treated to another memorable European night at Villa Park, where the atmosphere was electric. Though Bologna had a few chances, including hitting the woodwork late on, Villa maintained control, and the fans celebrated a well-earned victory.
With five games still to play in the group stage, Villa is well-positioned for a place in the knockout rounds.
