Ruben Amorim Awaits Decision on Manchester United Move

Ruben Amorim expects “clarification” on his potential move to Manchester United following Sporting’s game against Estrela on Friday. He is set to continue managing Sporting until the next international break from 11-19 November, though confusion lingers over whether a deal is in place for him to succeed Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed earlier in the week.

“It’s a negotiation between two clubs; it’s never easy,” said Amorim, 39. Despite United board member Sir Dave Brailsford reportedly telling fans the deal is “done” before their EFL Cup win over Leicester, Sporting officials insist talks are ongoing, with no official agreement yet. United has chosen not to comment on the situation.

Amorim noted, “Even with the clauses, it’s never easy. After the game, we’ll have a decision made.” Sporting faces crucial matches, including a Champions League game against Manchester City on Tuesday and a league match with Braga on 10 November.

Sporting, leading the league by three points after nine consecutive wins, recently defeated Nacional 3-1 in the Portuguese League Cup. However, Amorim admitted the speculation over his future has unsettled his squad. “They know me well, and I’ve always defended them, but some things are beyond my control,” he shared. Financial rules require Sporting to notify the Lisbon Stock Exchange when an agreement is confirmed.

Ruud van Nistelrooy ‘Motivated to Help’ as Interim Manager

Ruud van Nistelrooy, recently appointed United’s interim manager, held his first news conference on Thursday. The former United striker acknowledged the role is temporary and speculated that he would oversee Sunday’s match against Chelsea. “I felt called upon to help the club during this transition,” Van Nistelrooy explained, describing his mixed emotions over Ten Hag’s departure.

Van Nistelrooy also discussed recent conversations with Ten Hag, expressing empathy for his disappointment and pride in the legacy Ten Hag leaves behind, including two cups. Additionally, Van Nistelrooy recounted his brief chat with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who wished him luck.

Following Sunday’s Chelsea match, United’s schedule includes a Europa League fixture against PAOK on 7 November and a league game against Leicester on 10 November. After the international break, they face newly promoted Ipswich. Amorim’s first Old Trafford opposition could be Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on 28 November, followed by a league clash with Everton.

After United’s win over Leicester, Van Nistelrooy expressed his willingness to remain with the club “in any capacity.” The Dutchman stated, “I came here to help, and I’m very motivated to continue supporting the club in every way possible.”
