Ruud van Nistelrooy has departed Manchester United coaching staff after not being offered a role in the backroom staff of new manager Ruben Amorim.
The 48-year-old Dutchman had stepped in as interim manager following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. Initially joining United as an assistant coach in July on a two-year contract, Van Nistelrooy achieved three wins and a draw in his four games as caretaker manager.
However, Amorim opted not to retain Van Nistelrooy, who spent five successful seasons at United as a player.
In a statement, United expressed appreciation for Van Nistelrooy’s contributions, saying, “Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his commitment and the professionalism he brought to his role here. He will always be welcome at Old Trafford.”
The club also confirmed the departure of coaches Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and Pieter Morel. However, former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will stay on, continuing his role as a bridge between the first team and the academy.
United plans to announce Amorim’s complete first-team coaching lineup soon. Amorim, appointed earlier this month on a two-and-a-half-year contract, arrived from Sporting Lisbon on Monday, receiving a tour of United’s Carrington training complex from chief executive Omar Barrada. He has 13 days during the international break to prepare for his debut match, away against Ipswich on November 24.
Analysis: Van Nistelrooy’s Exit Not a Total Surprise
BBC Sport’s Chief Football News Reporter Simon Stone
Though not entirely unexpected, Van Nistelrooy’s exit will disappoint some fans. He had a contract as assistant manager through June 2026 and had expressed a desire to fulfill it. However, Amorim, known for his long-established coaching team, had no space for a figure with Van Nistelrooy’s experience and managerial ambitions.
United could have let Van Nistelrooy stay and make his case for a permanent role, but chief executive Omar Barrada was clear on bringing in Amorim, making the decision inevitable. Still, Van Nistelrooy’s positive impact over the past four games leaves the door open for potential future opportunities.
Interestingly, Darren Fletcher will remain, continuing to support the connection between the first team and academy—a move likely intended to maintain continuity within the club.
